Well first of all, and that might seem obvious, but your job got to be remotely workable. If you run a grocery store, that post won't probably be super useful. Tons of positions can adapt to the remote life though.
Then you got to work for a company/customers/partners who are open minded, and are flexible regarding working hours & communication. I'm lucky enough to work for Heetch, a ride sharing company that tries to do things differently and puts a lot of effort on each of its employees' well being.
As a lead developer and member of a cross-product team, I find myself involved in tons of discussions that need a smooth & constant communication. I can't just list a couple tasks, isolate myself and tackle everything in full autonomy. I need to manage, sync, report, lead on a daily basis. So it wasn't obvious that, as open-minded as they are, the founders of the company would let me wander around the globe. Yet, when I asked, our CTO immediately accepted, and even supported the idea, saying that he might do the same thing some day.
Conclusion being : if you want to do something like this, be sure the people you work with are ready for that kind of commitment, as it obviously will have an impact (by the way, we're hiring, )
So now it's up to me to prove that this trip is completely compatible with my job, no matter what time zone I'm in, and with various networking conditions.
I'll keep you posted about my expectations, plans, and how reality challenges them.
